| Shay Given joined the Magpies from Blackburn Rovers in June 1997.He was brought to the British game by fellow Irish keeper Packie Bonner at Celtic, but was released by the Glasgow giants when he was 18.He often played number two to Tim Flowers and made only two first-team appearances for Rovers in nearly three years at the club.Kenny Dalglish beat away the competition to sign the Republic of Ireland stopper, who cost £1.5million even though he was out of contract.Left out of the starting line-up for the 1998-99 FA Cup final, there was some doubt about his long-term future at the club. But, that was dispelled, despite the Irishman playing only 14 Premiership games the following season. |
