| One of Arsenal's best-ever signings, Bergkamp started his career at Dutch giants Ajax, where he netted 103 goals in 185 matches.Such an impressive strike-rate alerted Internazionale who splashed out £12million on the Dutch international. A slightly disappointing time in Italy, where he scored 11 goals in 52 matches, was ended in 1995 when Arsenal paid out a record fee of £7.5million for Holland's all-time leading goalscorer.The doubters criticised Bergkamp's signing when he took a few weeks to score his first goal for the Gunners, but with a sublime touch and tremendous shooting ability he soon silenced the critics.Player of the Month, Goal of the Month, Player of the Year, FA Cup winner, Premiership success - the list of awards goes on and on and on.Although he played for co-hosts Holland in Euro 2000 there wasn't to be a happy ending to a season that had been injury ravaged.A lengthy spell out of the Arsenal team through injury saw Bergkamp regain his full fitness in time to represent his country in the summer competition but the Dutch striker could not inspire Holland to the final. |
