| Paul Gascoigne |
Everton Born: 5/27/67 Hometown: Gateshead |
| Paul Gascoigne's colourful career is littered with moments of rare genius, with the goal at Wembley against Scotland in the 1996 European Championship probably being the jewel in the crown. His activities on and off the pitch have never ceased to keep the tabloids busy whether in Italy, Scotland or England. After a stint in Italy, Gascoigne had nearly three seasons at Ibrox before being tempted back to England in the doomed hope of restoring his international career for the 1998 World Cup.The maverick midfielder arrived at the Riverside in March 1998 just in time to help steer Boro through their successful promotion push. But he has not found things easy in the Premiership and only produced a handful of top-class perfomances in 1998-99 as personal problems and injury dampened his genius and restricted him to 25 league appearances.Walter Smith showed faith in a man that he managed successfully at Rangers by giving the mercurial talents of Gascoigne another chance, capturing the powerful midfielder in the summer of 2000.His first season at Goodison Park witnessed Gascoigne suffering from injury during November, December and part of January 2001. |
