![]() Fire forces evacuation at Wimbledon Posted: Saturday June 27, 1998 11:30 AM
LONDON, June 27 (Reuters) -- Play was halted at Wimbledon's Court 18 on Saturday afternoon after fire swept through a tower block overlooking the All England Club. Spectators of the Todd Woodbridge-Todd Martin match were shepherded away along with fans picnicking in Aorangi Park as a precaution. A Wimbledon spokesman said the court evacuation was a "security measure because of smoke." Eight fire engines were called to the 10-floor block. The top three floors were ablaze and one woman was treated for smoke inhalation.
