MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Wednesday was not a good day for seeded players at the Madrid Open.

Top seed Mary Pierce of France lost her opening-round match and was one of seven seeds ousted on the second day of play.

Pierce, who became tournament's the top seed when world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport bowed out with a back injury, lost her opening round match in 90 minutes to Italy's Germana di Natale, 6-4, 6-4.

Seeded players also losing in the second round of play Wednesday included American Amy Frazier, Ai Sugiyama of Japan, last year's runner-up Paola Suarez of Argentina and American Kristina Brandi.

The only seeded player to move on to the third round was eighth-seeded Spaniard Gala Leon with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Italy's Rita Grande.

Frazier, the second-seed, fell in straight sets to Spain's Virginia Ruano, 6-2, 6-3.

Sugiyama, seeded third, lost to Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga, 6-2, 6-4.

Suarez lost the first set of her match with Austrlia's Nicole Pratt, was leading 4-0 in the second set before retiring with a back injury.

Suarez's injury was not said to be serious, but she chose to avoid risking further injury with the French Open coming up next week.

Brandi was the fifth seeded player to lose Wednesday, dropping a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1) to Croatia's Iva Majoli.
