WILLIAM NACK

Biography

Bill Nack, one of Sports Illustrated's most distinguished writers, joined the magazine in 1979. In addition to writing in-depth profiles, he has been a mainstay on the horse racing beat, winning six Eclipse Awards from the Thoroughbred Racing Association for excellence in magazine writing. He also wrote "Secretariat: The Making of a Champion." Nack also contributes to CNN/Sports Illustrated.

Born in Chicago and raised in Skokie, Ill., Nack graduated from the University of Illinois before serving a two-year stint in the Army, the second in Vietnam. After his military service, he was a political and environmental writer, a turf reporter and a columnist for Newsday for 11 years.

Nack has written many memorable pieces for SI. His favorites include stories on the death of Secretariat, Sonny Liston and jockey Robbie Davis.

Nack, who has four children, lives in the Washington D.C. area.
