Reactions: WUSA Nicknames

CNNSI.com users name WUSA teams

Latest: Tuesday October 10, 2000 06:13 PM

Mia Hamm Although Mia Hamm may be finished playing for the national team, her WUSA career is just getting underway. Robert Cianflone/Allsport

The Women's United Soccer Association named its eight franchise cities. There is still a little work to do, though. The teams lack nicknames. We asked CNNSI.com users to brainstorm for nicknames. Here's a sample of the responses we received:

The San Diego Waves. We are both a beach community and a military community. It is a women's team, and Waves are females in the navy. Also, the logo would be good. Blue and yellow would be good colors to represent the water and sunshine. The Surf is also a good name, but there is a traveling team in San Duegito that uses it.

Boston Abies or Abigails. After Abigail Adams, a strong revolutionary woman, the wife of John Adams. She was the First Lady of the United States. It's better than the Boston Beans!
John Regan, Boston/Hartford

I say stick with the "bird" theme in Atlanta. You have the Falcons, Hawks, and Thrashers. Why not pick the Atlanta Ravens? It sort of has two meanings -- yes, it is a sometimes devouring bird, but it can also be used to describe a woman.

This isn't an original idea, but a lot of people think, including myself, that the WUSA San Diego franchise should be called the Fleet. It can have two meanings: "A number of warships operating together under one command," (sounds tough, in my opinion), and, of course, "swift or fast." San Diego is a Navy town, and names that have to do with the city sound better -- God knows where "Chargers" came from. But we've heard rumors of their nickname being "the scream," and just about anything is better than that.

I think that our Boston team should be named the Boston Glory. Women's soccer has come such a long way, and they should play for the glory of it, and so should we.
